Welcome to Hanashi bar

GOOD DRINKS. GOOD FOOD.
GOOD NOISES. GOOD STORIES.

Never been to an izakaya? Think of it as Japan's answer to a laneway bar - a place for casual drinking and small, shareable plates that keep coming as long as you keep ordering, rather than one big meal on one big plate.

We serve traditional izakaya dishes built on local ingredients, sketchy karaoke, and the faint smell of church. Our name, "Hanashi", means "story" in Japanese. Our bones, the "Gospel Hall", mean "good story" in Old English. From the history of Tasmania's first ramen pipeline to the vintage Kirin x Valerie Sheriff campaigns adorning our wood-panelled walls, we share the stories that have fused our Japanese-Tasmanian traditions.

Good stories. Good spirits (both kinds) are available from 12pm ’til late. Kanpai!
